Bill Aston was a British Saloon Car Championship driver, who competed between 1960 and 1963. Aston was the oldest driver in the field, having been 60 when he started in the championship.[2]
Background[]
Aston had had an extensive career before he came to the BSCC, having previously entered sports car races, Formula Three and Formula Two, having previously raced motorcycles.[3][2] Aston also entered three Formula One grand prix in 1952, starting one race (although he would retire early on).[2] Aston stopped racing after his failed Formula One career, although would return in 1960, running with Star Hill Racing Equipe in sports cars and the BSCC.[3]
BTCC History[]
Aston, at the age of 60, entered the BSCC for the first time, using a Jaguar Mk II under the Star Hill Racing Equipe banner.[4] A fifth place finish was bettered by two podiums before the end of the year, prompting Aston to continue in his endeavours.[4] Switching to a Mini Minor, provided by Downton Engineering, Aston claimed his first win at Silverstone in Class A, as well as two further podiums.[5] This was enough to give Aston third in class and tenth overall for the season.[5]
For 1962, Team Tourist Trophy invited Aston to race for them at the final three races of the season.[6] Using the new Vauxhall VX 4/90, Aston claimed second in only his second drive in the car, the best finish for the car.[6] Eight points resulted from the year, with Team Tourist Trophy asking Aston to race for them the following year.[6] Using a Jaguar Mk II 3.8, Aston claimed two more points finishes from four more starts, before ultimately retiring from racing at the end of the season.[7]
