Daniel Welch is a BTCC driver, currently competing in the 2014 season for his father's team, Welch Motorsport. Welch made his debut in 2011, and is one of the only drivers in BTCC history to have used a Proton.
Welch is set to compete in the BTCC for a fourth successive season. One again driving for his father's team (running under the name STP Racing with Sopp & Sopp), Welch will be using a Proton Persona, alongside another car prepared for Ollie Jackson. Although the season started on the 30th of March at Brands Hatch, Welch is yet to compete in the season, having had to withdraw from the opening weekend.
Welch, the son of John Welch (former British Rallycross driver), began his career in Formula Vauxhall in 2000. Welch stepped up to Formula Renault the following season, although Welch would never compete in a full season. In 2007, Welch switched to the SEAT Cupra Cup for two years, before driving in the SEAT Leon Eurocup in 2009 alongside competing in the Ginetta G50 Cup.
His father had previously set up a team to support Welch in his career. In 2011, the Welch family decided to enter the BTCC, although delays meant that they could only enter their new Proton Gen-2 in time for the sixth round at Snetterton. A single point was the result of their endevours into a new series.[[2012|2012]]thumb|Welch in his contender; a .|nullxnullpx saw Welch use a Proton Persona for the entire season. Welch's best finish to date came at Oulton Park, where a spirited defence from Matt Neal saw him take fourth place. This saw him awarded the HiQ Champagne Moment in 2012, as well as a best championship finish of 15th. 2013 was a more disappointing year for Welch, unable to better his fourth place finish in a race in 2013.
