Edward Lewis is a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, who competed between 1960 and 1964.

Background[]

Lewis had already established a career in sports cars prior to his BSCC career, most often competing with a Lotus built car.[1] As early as 1954, Lewis had entered in sports car races in Britain, and by 1960, he had won a few high level events.[1] Lewis would not return to the sports cars until the later part of his touring car phase.[1]

BTCC History[]

Lewis entered his first race in 1960, using an Austin A40 as a privateer.[2] Seventh place was bettered at the next race, before Lewis caused an upset by beating George "Doc" Shepherd to victory in the 1,000 class.[2] This victory, combined with two further podiums, was enough to see Lewis claim third overall in the championship, a result which he would not improve upon.[2]

1961 and 1962 saw Lewis switch to a Riley 1.5, running in the reformatted Class B.[3] After finishing fourth in the first race of the year (using a Morris Mini Minor) Lewis would not attend the next four races.[3] Three second places and a third saw Lewis claim fourth in Class B and ninth overall.[3] Westover Racing decided to back Lewis for 1962, with Lewis taking sixteen points through the year.[4]

Westover Racing continued to support Lewis into 1963, with Lewis investing his money in a Morris Mini Cooper S, running in Class A.[5] Sixteen points was again the result from the season, with Lewis taking his second (and last) victory at the end of the season.[5] With Westover Racing removing their backing, Lewis obtained a drive with Don Moore for 1964.[6] Lewis would only compete in the first four races of the year, taking third in the opening round.[6] Lewis' final race came at Aintree, where he took fifth in his Mini Cooper S.[6]
