Peter Harper was a former British Touring Car Championship driver and Class winner, having finished as Class B champion in 1962. Harper raced in the BTCC in Sunbeam's factory backed team Sunbeam Talbot Ltd. from 1960 to 1963.
Background[]
Harper's motorsport career began after he left the Royal Air Force at the end of the Second World War, entering a number of rallies in Britain.[1] In 1947, Harper entered the Monte Carlo Rally for the first time, winning his class.[1] Harper became a regular face at the Rally, often winning his class.[1]
BTCC History[]
Harper entered the British Saloon Car Championship in 1960, entering the 1600cc class at the Farningham Trophy race at Brands Hatch, ultimately winning his class. This was followed by four races in 1961, in which Harper added three more wins to his tally, running a factory backed Sunbeam Rapier Series III. Harper finished the year third in class and seventh overall.
For 1962, Harper decided to enter every race that season, his eyes on claiming the title. Unfortunately. for Harper, Class B proved to be more competitive than it had been in previous years, meaning that John Love would go on to win the 1962 title. Regardless, Harper finished the season as runner up and won his class, having taken four class wins.
This form continued into the following season, although Harper would only win in his class at the first round, as the new Ford Cortina (and, later, Lotus Cortina) came to dominate the class. Harper's last race in the BSCC came at the seventh round of 1963, finishing third in class (and ultimately, third in the Class standings at the end of the season).
