George Shepherd, popularly known as the "Doctor", was a former British Touring Car Championship champion and Class winner. "Doc" was able to win the 1960 championship, having finished in fourth in 1958, and second in 1959.
Background[]
Shepherd made his name as a qualified gp, building up enough money to invest in a career in motorsport.[1] In 1958 he bought an Austin A35, and began to race in the newly formed British Saloon Car Championship.
BTCC History[]
In the first championship race of the season, "Doc" finished second in his class, a feat he would repeat in the subsequent three races.[2] After a retirement at the fifth meeting of the year, Shepherd won three of the remaining three Class A races that year, signalling his intent for the following year.[2] In 1959, (armed with a larger Austin A40) Shepherd took four wins, with a further second place, although two retirements at the final two meetings of the year handed the title to Jeff Uren.[2]
In 1960, however, with new regulations coming into play, Shepherd's best chance to win the title came.[3] Six wins and eight races later, the "Doctor" took his BSCC crown, proving to be the quickest driver in the new format.[3] Yet, his title defense the following year would prove to be fruitless, as his Austin Mini Seven suffered enough damage that he could not continue to compete in the series. Shepherd retired from the BSCC that year.
