Jackie Oliver is a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, who competed in the late 1960s.
Background[]
Oliver began racing in club championships at the age of nineteen, competing in club championships in Britain from 1961.[2] He entered sports car races a year later, developing a certain affinity with a Marcos GT and later a Lotus Elan.[3][2] He also had a stint in Formula Three, where his talent was masked by numerous retirements (a factor which would affect him throughout his career.[2]
BTCC History[]
Oliver came to the BSCC in the second half of 1966, racing a Ford Mustang under the DR Racing banner.[4] A second place on his debut at Brands Hatch saw him in battle with Gawaine Baillie for second (unable to stay with race winner Roy Pierpoint).[4] He improved on this at the following race, taking victory at the Edward Lewis Trophy Meeting (again hosted at Brands), before taking a second victory at the final meeting of the year.[4] Oliver finished the year second in Class D with 22 points, beating Jack Brabham by two points.[4]
1967 saw Oliver compete for a full season, taking three wins and five podiums.[5] Frequently at the front of the field, Oliver could have been a title contender, but two retirements in the first four races cost him several points, finishing fourth overall and runner-up in Class D again.[5] DR Racing pulled out of the BSCC at the end of the season, and with Oliver obtaining a drive in Formula One for Team Lotus, it looked unlikely that he would compete in the championship again.[2] However, Alan Mann Racing invited Oliver to race one of their Ford Escort TCs at two races.[6] Two podium finishes saw Oliver claim ten points, but his attention was focused on Formula One, leaving the championship for good after his second race in 1968.[6]
