The Jaguar Mk II was a British Saloon Car Championship car, manufactured by Jaguar in Great Britain. The Mk II became an instant icon in the sport, taking twenty race victories on the trot between 1961 and 1963, and powered Graham Hill to a Class championship in 1963.
BTCC History[]
The Mk II was first entered into the BSCC in 1960, when Gawaine Baillie entered his privately owned machine at the second round of the season. Baillie, competing in the non-championship eligible 1600+ class, won the race, meaning the Mk II won on its debut.[2] Four further wins in the class proved that the Jaguar would be a force to be reckoned with when the BSCC changed to Group 2 regulations.[2]
In 1961, the Mk II began its run of twenty consecutive victories, with Baillie taking victory at the first meeting of the year at the Lombank Trophy support race.[3] That season saw Mike Parkes challenge for the title, as the Jaguars battled at the front of the field, denying each other points.[3] As such, Parkes won the Class D championship, while Chris Kerrison, using a 2.4 litre Mk II, won the Class C championship with two class wins.[3]
The Equipe Endeavour team won Class D once again with a Mk II, this time with former champion Jack Sears (running under his friend Tommy Sopwith's team) winning the class.[4] This season saw the infamous battles between the Jaguars and the Mini Coopers of Class A, although the Jags were, once again, taking points off of each other, meaning that they could not challenge for the overall title.[4] The challenge of driving a Mk II attracted some of the biggest names in British motorsport, with Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori coming to drive the Mk IIs once more.[4]
