John Aley is a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, who drove in the earliest years of the championship. Aley was often seen as the "old man" of the championship, being older and more experienced than most of his competitors.[1]
Background[]
Aley had a reasonably diverse career before he entered the BSCC, buying numerous cars in front-wheel drive format.[1] This, Aley himself believes, gave him an advantage when the BSCC became associated with the Mini, with Morris and Austin produced cars for the championship.[1] His experience mainly came from club championships across Britain.[2]
BTCC History[]
Aley's first venture into the BSCC came in 1960, running a black and white Austin A35 under Cambridge Racing.[1] Having bought the car after crashing it, Aley claimed two podiums in the A35, with the new Mini set to be his next machine in 1961.[1] The move proved successful, with Aley frequently finishing on the podium.[3] Eighth overall resulted from the season, with second place in Class A, while the car became the run-about for his wife.[2]
1962 saw Aley take his first victory, using the Mini that had been retired when he obtained a contract with German team Squadra Blez International.[2] Equiped with a DKW Junior deLuxe, Aley was set to spend the season in the BSCC, although a failure before the race saw him use the Mini at the opening round of the year.[4] Victory resulted in the lesser Class A 850 class after team mates Peter Ruby and Wolf-Dieter Mantzel retired from the race.[4] Aley's car was used by Frank Hamlin at the following round, before he took the car to Germany to race in European Touring Car Championships.[2] Aley appeared three more times in the BSCC, using Minis of different origins to finish outside of the podium.[2]
Aley would later establish himself as an entrant/engineer rather than a driver, although his main focus would be in Europe rather than the BSCC.[2]
