John Maxwell Lineham Love was a British Touring Car Championship champion and class winner, whom raced in the series from 1962 until 1964.[1] Love (born in the Republic of Rhodesia in 1924) was the second driver to win the BTCC using a Mini Cooper, and would go on to drive in the Formula One World Championship.[1]
Background[]
Love's racing career began when he entered a series of Formula 3 races in Southern Africa.[1] From this he began to enter a Triumph bike in motorcycle racing, before allowing Jim Redman to use the bike when Redman began his motorsport career.[1] Love came to Europe in 1961, entering the Formula Junior championship, before stepping up to Formula One, and the BSCC in 1962.[1]
BTCC History[]
Love was signed by the Cooper Car Co. to race in both the BSCC and in a number of Formula One races during 1962.[1] The move was immediately successful (in the BSCC atleast) as Love won his class on his debut at Snetterton.[2] A retirement at the second round was followed by six successive class victories, including some epic battles with the Class B Sunbeams and herd of Jaguars that populated Class D.[2] As a result, Love became the second driver in two years to win the championship in their debut season (after John Whitmore).[2]
In 1963 and 1964, Love's interest in the BSCC fell away, as he pursued his chance to drive in Formula One. Three more appearances would yield only one finish, a seventh place, across the two years, with Love not returning to the championship after 1964.
