Mike Salmon is a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, who raced between 1963 and 1966.
Background[]
Salmon's name first appeared on entry sheets in 1955, competing in a Jaguar XK120 in a Sports Car race at Crimond.[2] He continued to race sports cars throughout his career (alongside his time in the BSCC), competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship numerous times and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.[2]
BTCC History[]
Salmon's first drive in the BSCC came at the start of 1963, driving a Jaguar Mk II prepared by Atherstone Racing.[3] Three podiums in his first three races saw Salmon competing with the likes of Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori for victory, although he was often beaten by them.[3] A best finish of second came at the final race of the year, giving Salmon 22 points and joint tenth (tied with David Haynes) overall.[3]
After missing 1964, Salmon returned for 1965, competing in half of the years races.[4] Using a Daynay Racing built Ford Mustang, Salmon took his one and only victory at the third meeting of the year, beating the Ford Galaxie of Alan Hutcheson and fellow Mustangs Roy Pierpoint and Gawaine Baillie.[4] Fourteen points resulted from the season.[4] Lord Viscount Downe (a member of the Irish peerage) decided to enter a team in the 1966 season, buying a Cobra engined Mustang with Salmon at the wheel.[5] Two podiums and a fourth gave Salmon ten points, who missed the final three races due to his commitments else where.[5] A fifth place at the Peter England Trophy meeting was Salmon's last result in the BSCC.[5]
