Mike Young was a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, known for leading the challenge of the Ford Anglia against the Mini domination of the early 1960s.

Background[]

Young began racing in 1954, entering into sports car races at club level.[1] He continued to do this until 1956, before entering club level races in numerous cars.[1]

BTCC History[]

Obtaining a contract with Superspeed Conversions Ltd., Young entered his first two races in a Ford Cortina GT, retiring from both.[2] After missing the seventh meeting, Young returned with a Ford Anglia Super built by Superspeed.[2] Three podiums from the final four rounds resulted from the change, prompting Young to continue into the following season.[2]

Young would use the Anglia for the rest of his BSCC career, leading the challenge to the Mini Cooper which had dominated the series lower orders.[3] After a disappointing ninth in the opening round of 1964, Young managed to take two victories on the trot in Class A beating the Minis for the first time.[3] The rest of the year would not result in any more victories, although Young was disqualified after finishing winning the class at the Molyslip Trophy race, effectively denying him eight points which would have seen him win the class championship.[3] 1965 saw Young compete in four races, starting three and only finishing on the podium once (with another disqualification), with his car running under R. Trustram.[4]

Superspeed Conversions Ltd. returned their name to Young's team for 1966, a season which saw the BSCC change to Group 5 regulations.[5] Four wins in Class B, coupled with two retirements meant Young finished runner up in his class for a second time.[5] Young hoped to make 1967 his title winning year, but the aging Anglia became increasingly unreliable.[6] Two further wins came from the season, with Young leaving the championship at the end of the year.[6]
