Ray Calcutt is a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, who was noted for his use of a Hillman Imp in the mid-1960s.
Background[]
Calcutt had little racing experience before he entered the BSCC, mainly competing in club competitions.[1] He began an association with the Alan Fraser Racing Team in 1964, driving a Sunbeam Alpine for them in 1964.[1] This drive ultimately led him to the BSCC in 1966.
BTCC History[]
For 1966, Alan Fraser bought two Hillman Imps for their two drivers, Calcutt and Nick Brittan.[2] Calcutt got the better start to the season, being the only Imp man to finish the first race, before coming second to John Fitzpatrick at the next two.[2] Calcutt suffered two retirements and two third places in the second half of the season, claiming second place in Class A and seventh overall.[2]
After missing 1967, Calcutt returned for Alan Fraser in the Imp in 1968.[3] He took his only class win at the opening race, benefitting from the fact that Chris Craft was excluded after retiring in the second heat at Brands Hatch.[3] Two more third places resulted from the year, although he did miss six races through the season through other commitments.[3] Calcutt appeared in the championship once more in the championship in 1972, although he failed to start the race after being listed as a reserve driver.[4]
