Rob Mason is a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, who competed between 1969 and 1974 in both Mini Coopers and Triumph Dolomites.
Background[]
Mason had very little experience before he joined Don Moore in the BSCC, largely competing in club events across the UK.[1]
BTCC History[]
Mason would only complete one full season in the BSCC, using a Don Moore prepared Mini Cooper S 970 in 1969.[2] Running against Alec Poole, Mason often proved to be his closest competitor, although the Irishman had the run of the rest in Class A, meaning Mason would have to settle for second in class in his debut year.[2] That said, Mason did get the better of Poole at a couple of races, including at Crystal Palace, the track where he took his first victory.[2]
Don Moore allowed Mason to leave and compete in the ETCC after 1969, although he would drive for them twice more in 1971, although he failed to score points.[3] In 1972 Ken Costello contacted Mason, asking him to drive for him that year.[4] Three podiums combined with two points finishes gave Mason 20 points, although he did miss five rounds that year.[4]
Shellsport Arden acquired Mason's services for 1974, although he would miss two rounds.[5] Mason would take his second and final win in the championship, claiming victory at Brands Hatch in his Triumph Dolomite Sprint.[5] Scoring that season was varied, and with Mason only taking two more points finishes, he was well out of the running for the championship by the end, leaving the championship for the final time at the end of the year.[5]
