Vic Elford is a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, and class winner, having won the Class C championship in 1967. "Quick Vic" as he was named during his career, was well known for his exploits in Porsches, having competed in Sports cars, rallies and Formula One as well as the BSCC.[1]

Background[]

Elford was in the opening stages of his co-driver career when he first took the wheel of a rally car in 1961, opting to drive instead of coordinate, buying his first rally car (a Mini).[2] After appearing at a single race in the BSCC that year, Elford continued with rallying (ultimately winning the European Rally championship in 1967), while beginning to enter sports car races in 1964.[3] In 1967, Elford began an association with Porsche that would define his career.[3]

BTCC History[]

Elford's exploits in the Mini he took rallying caught the eye of Don Moore, who gave him a one-off drive at the VIII Gold Cup meeting of 1961.[4] His second place helped John Whitmore to win the title that year, although Elford would not return to the championship, focusing instead on his rallying.

In 1967, however, the BSCC's switch to FIA Group 5 regulations meant that the Porsche 911 (which Elford had been introduced to earlier that year) was eligable for the championship, with AFN servicing the car for him.[5] After a promising third place (behind the Team Lotus cars) in Class C on his debut, Elford was forced to retire from the following two races (body damage and engine failure respectively).[5] He would bounce back, however, at Silverstone, claiming victory after trouble came to the Team Lotus cars early on.[5] A second victory was taken at Brands Hatch at the penultimate race of the year, with second places at three of the other six races coming for the 911 driver.[5] In the end, Elford's car proved to be the most consistent in Class C, giving him fourty points and the class title.[5]

1968 looked set to be the year that Elford would dominate, with the 911 developing quickly.[6] He proved this by taking victory at two of the first three rounds (on the pace of the more powerful Falcons of Brian Muir and Frank Gardner), and setting the fastest lap in all three.[6] However, his commitments elsewhere (namely for the Porsche factory team in various sports car races), prevented him from competing in the championship for the remainder of the season, with the 911 being banned by the start of 1970.[6]
