Warwick Banks is a former British Saloon Car Championship driver and class winner, having won in Class A in 1965. Banks also finished runner up to Roy Pierpoint in 1965, despite finishing level on points with the champion.[2]

Banks' career began in the early 1960s, making his first steps in British Formula Three.[3] Running under Jackie Stewart, Banks scored an impressive victory in his first season in 1963, before moving to touring cars the following year.[3] Using an Austin built Mini Cooper S 970, Banks claimed his first major championship, taking the European Touring Car Championship title for 1964.[3] A change in class structure in the ETCC prompted Banks to try the BSCC instead.[3]

BTCC HistoryEdit

Using a more powerful version of the Mini Cooper S, Banks made two appearances in the 1964 season, driving on behalf of Don Moore.[4] Although he failed to score points on his debut, Banks finished his first race, only missing out on the final point position by a couple of seconds.[4] He improved on this a meeting later, taking fourth at the following race.[4]

For 1965, Banks opted to use the Cooper S 970 that took him to the ETCC title, running under the Cooper Car Company banner.[2] Three victories in the first three races put him in prime position for the title, although missing a round and a retirement cost Banks momentum.[2] In the end, however, Banks was able to take maximum points, and would have won the title had Pierpoint not picked up a victory at the final race of the season, leaving them level on points.[2] Although this has happened before (with Jack Sears and Tommy Sopwith duelling for the title in a two race shootout), the title was awarded to Pierpoint by virtue of his overall wins and dropped score record.[2] Banks moved away from touring cars at the end of the year.
